More often than not you hear your children say, “I am bored.” This often leads parents to find something for them to do. I learned early on not to pester my parents in regards to boredom, because my mother always believed cleaning was the cure for my boredom. However, scientists are finding that boredom is a great way to help your children grow.
The reasoning for doing nothing when your child is bored
Next time your child says I am bored, your best move is to not respond. Allow them to get lost in their thoughts, use their imagination, and utilize their creativity. You will be amazed at just how resourceful children can be when they are bored. It is wise to have items they can use to make things. For instance, keep pipe cleaners, tissue paper, toilet paper rolls, markers, etc. on hand. This will help gear them towards being creative versus being destructive.
Send your kids outside
Outside has always been a place to help spark any imagination, and this is no different for children. I have witnessed my children spending hours creating art out of products made by nature, such as leaves, sticks, and acorns. Consider giving them an outdoor assignment before they even tell you they are bored. This will allow them to express themselves as well as feel good about something they have created. If you do not want them tearing your yard up, then create a space that is specifically for them. You will be surprised at how long a child will dedicate their time to digging a hole if you allow them to.
Most kids these days spend their time on electronic devices, and this makes it hard for them to think when they are not being entertained. However, it is beneficial to take away their electronics from time to time. This will help their brains to wander, and in turn you will find that they are less cranky, more alert, and easier to communicate with. It will take some time for them to shake the mental fog that electronics tend to put them in; however, you will notice that they rebound rather quickly.
You will honestly do them a favor by making them use their brain, and ultimately you are helping raise a child that does not need constant attention and gratification. This helps to build better minds as well as problem solvers, and the world certainly needs more of these types of minds. The less time they spend on electronic devices, the better their sleep habits will become, and this is a win win situation for everyone in the house.
Help them learn to be bored effectively
Most children do not consider yoga or meditation as something that is fun. However, these practices are very beneficial, and they even help you tap into yourself on a deeper level. This will help ensure that your children have less mental stresses, confusion, or pent up anger. There is truly nothing better than a great stretch or a moment of silence to help calm and recharge your mind and body.
Remember, the earlier you incorporate these practices into their lives, the better the chances are that they will become daily habits for the rest of their lives. You not only help them combat boredom when they are young, but you are helping them learn to deal with stress when you are no longer taking care of them on a daily basis.
It is helpful to remember that you do not have to appease your children on a daily basis. The easiest way to help them learn to cope with the lack of being entertained is to limit how often they are being entertained. There are times when it is okay to sit down and watch television or play video games, however, try to limit these aspects to ensure their brains are active on a regular basis.
Children absorb everything they see like a sponge
If you watch children interact with one another, then you can honestly tell what they have been watching on television. After all, they are sponges, and they will mimic just about everything they see. Therefore, it is helpful to create great personal habits such as exercise, meditation, creative time, and quiet time for yourself as well. This will give them something positive to copy, and you will feel so much better as a person in the end.
