The teat is a great tool when your baby is crying and you want it to stop. At some point your little one will also have to learn that the teat can no longer be used. You can throw it away, but there are other ways you can unlearn it.
Why stop the teat?
There are a number of important reasons why your child should stop using the teat at some point. First of all, over time, his or her mouth is more likely to be open at all times. This is because your child’s mouth muscles will develop less if he or she is still using the teat.
In addition, it can cause inflammation and colds because your child keeps breathing through his or her mouth. There can also be a lot of space between the upper and lower teeth. This is called the well-known monkey bite. The upper and lower teeth then become very crooked, which can also cause problems later in life.
How to stop the teat?
We have prepared the following tips for you that will make your child stop weaning:
- Slowly reduce the amount of time using the teat
- Make it fun and surprising
- Don’t give the teat directly after birth
- Choose the right moment
- Remain consequent
Don’t expect your child to stop using the teat from one day to another. This is a process which takes time. Therefore, reduce it slowly and give your child the teat at least once in a while in the beginning. This way, you ensure a pleasant process for both you and the child.
Make it fun and surprising
Make it fun for your kid, too. Say, for example, that the tooth fairy brought the teat or make up another fun story. Children have a great imagination and are more motivated to stop with something they love, if there is a great story behind it.
Don’t give the teat directly
If your child is crying, don’t automatically give him or her the teat. You often see parents doing that in order to silence their children. They switch to autopilot and immediately give the child the teat if he or she asks for it. However, do not do this! This way, your child will start to cry more, in hope of getting the teat back. You do not want to go there.
Choose the right moment
If you’re just moving to another house, a brother or sister has just been born or you’ve bought a new pet, don’t start yet. The uncertainty and frenzy can make your baby want the teat more instead of less. Therefore, pick a moment when you external environment is calm and you can focus on the process together with your baby.
Also stand firm if your child asks for it a lot. It is for his or her own good that your little one stops with the teat. Do not give in to their tantrums, even if it is hard sometimes.
With the tips above, you will surely manage to stop your child from using its teat. Give them a try!
